3 DIY Carpet Cleaning Methods to Get Rid of Stains

We all know that cleaning a carpet can be a huge hassle. That’s why many of us put a lot of effort into ensuring they do not get dirty in the first place. This can mean taking off shoes before stepping on a carpet or avoiding bringing food and drinks to any carpeted areas.

Unfortunately, even if you make every effort to ensure your carpets stay clean, dirt, stains, and spills will always find their way to ruin the fabric. When that happens, you are left with no choice but to clean.

Fortunately for you, there are many DIY methods to clean and freshen your carpet. Here are a few you can try out.

  1. General stain-cleaning method

For general stains, fill two empty spray bottles: one with cold water and the other with a mixture of 1-cup warm water and a quarter teaspoon of dishwashing liquid.

With the spray bottles ready, spray the stain first with the dishwashing solution. Use a clean cloth to gently dab the solution into the stain to dissolve it. After that, grab a clean towel and blot the area to get rid of the stain. Repeat the dabbing and blotting until the stain has gone.

After that, spray cold water onto the cloth and blot the area with it. Then, stack some paper towels on the area and weigh those down with a heavy object, like a book. This will soak up the remaining water and stain particles overnight.

Note that this method is for general stains. If this does not work, you will have to look for methods specific to the type of stain.

  1. Wine and coffee stain removal method

If you have spilled wine onto your carpet, do your best to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. After that, grab a wine-cleaning solution and soak the stained area with it. After five or so minutes, use a damp, clean cloth to blot the area until the stain is gone.

As for coffee, you will generally do the same thing, except that the cleaning solution will be a mix of one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid, one tablespoon of white vinegar, and two cups of warm water. Spray the affected area with this solution and blot it with a dry cloth until the stain is gone.

  1. Pet stain removal method

Sometimes, your pet can poop or pee on your carpet, leaving an ugly and stinky stain behind. To get rid of the stain, you will have to resort to cleaning solutions meant for pet stains. These products will remove the stain and the foul odour.

To properly get rid of the stain, spray the affected area with the cleaning solution and gently massage it in with a damp cloth. After a few minutes, use another clean, damp cloth to cover the spot for half a day. This should soak up the stain along with any other odour-producing bacteria.

Conclusion

That way, even if you cannot remove it entirely, you will save as much of the carpet as possible. However, if you do find that your carpet is far from saving, worry not!
