When you're incorporating elements into your space, paying close attention to exact measurements is important to ensure that everything fits nicely. One of the biggest mistakes many clients make is ignoring the fact that measuring a carpet before buying one is essential.

Measuring a carpet gives you a realistic idea of how much carpet space your room requires. Additionally, when you know the space requirement, shopping for carpets and installing them will be much easier. By knowing the carpet will be a perfect fit, it eliminates unnecessary costs and returns that could cause a delay in your construction project.

However, measuring your carpet is essential. Many are still confused when they hold up a measuring device and aren't quite sure about what exactly they're measuring. If you're one of those, don't fret. So before you head to a carpet store and start hunting for your carpet, here's our ultimate guide that will help you measure carpets the right way. Let's get to it!

Tools You Will Need

  • Measuring tape or laser distance measurer;

  • Calculator;

  • Note-taking app or pen and paper;

  • Graph paper and pencil for your layout design;

Areas You Need to Measure

Before heading to a carpet store, here are some areas that you need to consider measuring to ensure that you buy the perfect carpet for your space:

1. Measure the Room's Width and Length

  • Lay your tape measure against the wall on each end of the room. After, note this number as the length.

  • Do the same for the other walls in the space in opposite directions — this is your room's width.

If you're dealing with an L-shaped space, measure the area as two separate rooms. Additionally, closets should be counted as different rooms as well.

2. Measure the Middle of Doorways

All rooms have a doorway leading to them unless you have a room entered by a step. With that being said, ensure that you're also measuring the middle of the opening and add two to three inches in your overall measurement.

  • For each wall and area with a doorway, measure the middle of your doorframe and use the highest number of inches found for any wall. Make sure to include closet doors;

  • For each wall, ensure that you add doorway-allowances inches to its width or length as needed.

3. Measure Carpet for the Stairs

Another area that you should forget is the area that leads to stairs going down, such as the landing or hallway. When you measure this area, ensure that you measure the nosing and the ledge of the stairs.

  • Hold your measuring tape against the opposite wall and wrap it around the nosing until it reaches the back or riser of the stairs below. This will make measuring your carpet much easier, and you'll find one that fits snug in the landing of your staircase;

  • Consider the shape, size, and configuration of your staircase when measuring;

The Bottom Line: It's Best to Call a Professional

Sure, you can measure your area and carpet space on your own. But when the math part comes in, it may be challenging to lay out your room and measure its entirety, especially when you're dealing with slants and curves. Because of this, going to a reliable carpet store and asking for assistance may be a huge help.
